How we've come to own our homes

Southway was created in 2007 when tenants voted to transfer their homes from Manchester City Council to a housing association.

Since then, we've continued to grow and now own and manage more than 6,500 homes across Greater Manchester.

We've increased the number of homes we provide through new developments, acquisitions and investment in existing properties.

Our homes

Most of our homes are located in South Manchester, although we also have homes in other parts of Greater Manchester and Cheshire. This chart shows the different areas we own homes in. 

Our housing stock includes a mix of property types, including houses, apartments, cottage flats and specialist accommodation.

While many of our homes are traditional houses built between the First and Second World Wars, the number of apartment buildings in our portfolio has increased in recent years.

We provide homes for people with a wide range of housing needs.

Looking after our homes

Keeping our homes safe, well maintained and in good condition is one of our most important responsibilities as a landlord.

To help us do this, we regularly look at the condition of our homes and keep information about key parts of each property, including things like:

  • Roofs
  • Windows and doors
  • Kitchens and bathrooms
  • Heating systems
  • Other important building components

This information helps us understand what repairs and improvements we may need to make, plan future investment and make sure our homes continue to meet the standards they need to meet. You can find out more about the condition of our homes on our Tenant Satisfaction Measures (TSMs) page.

We also carry out regular surveys to check the condition and energy performance of our homes. These surveys help us identify where improvements can be made and make sure our homes are safe, comfortable and energy efficient. Find out more about that below.
