The day started with a safety talk before volunteers split into groups and began activities around the community. The event was organised by Felix Aduloju, Housing Officer at Southway, who helped to bring everyone together for a successful day of community action.
We were pleased to welcome Councillor Dave Rawson, Jane Gant (Executive Director of Homes and Communities at Southway), Carl Talbot-Davies (Assistant Director of Asset Management at Southway). We were also joined by representatives from Greater Manchester Police (GMP), members of our Assets team, and volunteers from Barlow Moor Community Association.
Lots of important work was completed during the day. Overgrown hedges were cut back to make pathways easier and safer to use, and volunteers helped residents clear unwanted items so they could be put into the skip.
At the same time, GMP representatives and Cllr Dave Rawson joined Southway staff and volunteers to pick up litter. They also spent time talking with residents about local issues and what matters most to the community.
We’d like to say a big thank you to our contractor partners whose support helped make the day possible:
- JMW Services NW Ltd: supported the environmental team with hedge cutting along the estate.
- Emanuel-Whittaker Ltd: for providing safety equipment, a skip, a van and coordinating activities around the skip and litter picking on the day.
- Orbis: for providing safety equipment and helping with litter picking.
- Redgate Holdings Ltd: for providing a skip on the day.
- Jewson Partnership Solutions: for providing safety equipment and 15 empty 1 tonne bags to help the hedge cutting team.
- Barclays: for providing lunch on the day as well as nine volunteers that participated in different activities throughout.
- SofraMCR CIC: for providing lunch on the day and bringing extra food for the volunteers.
Their commitment to social value has made a real difference. Southway work with our contractors to ensure their social value commitments support Southway’s Corporate Plan and respond directly to the needs of our communities.
The day showed what can be achieved when organisations, community groups, and residents work together. Thanks to everyone’s hard work and enthusiasm, the event helped create a cleaner, safer, and stronger neighbourhood for all.
