Equality, Diversity, Inclusion

We believe everyone deserves to feel respected, valued and included, whoever they are and wherever they live.

At Southway, equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) are central to how we work, how we treat each other, and how we serve our communities. Whether we’re supporting our tenants, working with partners, or making decisions about our services, we aim to reflect the diverse communities we’re part of and ensure that no one is left out.

Equalities Scheme

We’re committed to:

  • Treating everyone fairly and with respect
  • Making our homes and services accessible to all
  • Celebrating the richness of our communities
  • Removing barriers that prevent people from thriving

We know that people’s experiences and needs vary. That’s why we regularly review our services to make sure they work for everyone whatever their age, background or circumstances.

In 2023, our Board approved a new Equalities Scheme that guides our work from 2023 to 2028. This scheme is more than a document. It’s a promise. It helps us make real changes, from shaping age-friendly services to supporting digital inclusion and welfare rights.

We’ll keep listening, learning and improving so that our support stays fair, accessible and right for you.

Alongside the nine protected characteristics in the Equality Act 2010, we’ve chosen to recognise four additional groups in our Equalities Scheme:

  • Armed Forces Veterans
  • Carers
  • Care Leavers
  • People experiencing poverty or social disadvantage

We’ve included socio-economic status because many of the communities we serve in South Manchester face significant challenges related to poverty and health inequality.

We’re proud of our continued support for Armed Forces Veterans and hold a Silver Award through the Armed Forces Covenant.

For Care Leavers, we’ve signed the Greater Manchester Housing Providers Care Leavers Pledge, helping young people feel secure as they move towards independence.
