Green light for social rent homes in Chorlton

Manchester City Council has approved Southway Housing Trust’s plans for the apartments on Wilbraham Road at the junction with Corkland Road.

The plans involve the demolition of an empty building, once used as a nursery, to make way for a three-storey scheme of six two-bed and three one-bedroom homes.

These homes will provide more options for social rent tenants including for people wanting to move into smaller properties through rightsizing.

The new homes at Wilbraham Road will be fully electric with air source heat pumps for hot water and solar panels for power. Bird boxes will also support swifts and swallows in the area.

The scheme also goes above planning requirements for biodiversity retaining existing landscaping and creating new green spaces, trees and hedgerows to support wildlife. Bird boxes will also support swifts and swallows in the area.

Jonathan Turner, Assistant Director of Development at Southway Housing Trust said: “Getting the go ahead to build this scheme is great news as it means we can provide more homes for social rent in a central part of Chorlton where one and two-beds are in high demand.

“This gives people more options to move to smaller homes to suit their needs freeing up larger family-sized homes.”

Cllr Gavin White, Manchester City Council’s Executive Member for Housing and Development, added: “High quality, social rent homes are in exceptionally high demand across the city – and this is ever more so in the Chorlton area where affordability is a challenge. So, this is a really welcome scheme to create more options to access affordable homes in the heart of the neighbourhood, close to shops and transport links. We're working closely with the city’s housing providers to maximise the number of genuinely affordable homes in Manchester and this development will complement other projects in Chorlton that are capped at social rent level, creating real housing choice in this community.”

Work on the new homes will start in the spring with completion due next summer.

Planning permission was granted on 5 January 2026.
