The sun was shining down on Barlow Hall as we raised a ninth consecutive Green Flag for the green space earlier this week.

We were thrilled to be joined by Southway staff, members of the Barlow Hall volunteer group and local councillors to recognise this amazing achievement and look around the fantastic community space.

Receiving the award for the ninth time is a testament not only to the continued high-quality work and commitment of Southway’s Environment team but also to the vital efforts of our many community volunteers.

In the words of our Urban Ranger, Debbie Wallace:

“None of this would be possible without the involvement and commitment of our community.

From the monthly Mottram Veggie Planters meet ups, to community litter picks, Fungi Walks, family events and many different projects to create places for nature to thrive, every one of these has the help and involvement of fantastic people who volunteer their time and energy to make our green flag site and our community special”.

In the feedback given to us by the Green Flag Judge, Mary Bagley, the sense of collaboration and togetherness was similarly emphasised.

“There is a great pride of place and engagement of local people.

The way the local community is involved has helped to make people have pride in their open space and has helped so many people be the eyes and ears on the ground for the site.

Debbie is a fabulous coordinator of the site and her passion and commitment has brought everyone together to ensure the site is well managed and maintained. The partnership work on site is key to the success and is inspirationally led by Debbie.”

Along with the encouraging praise, the judges’ comments presented us with ways to continue improving the site for the community, which we are gladly taking on board.

We’re excited to continue growing and evolving Barlow Hall, providing a space for the whole community to reflect, relax and enjoy.

The importance of green spaces where nature and communities can help each other thrive cannot be understated. Barlow Hall not only helps to promote wildlife and biodiversity, but it also hosts community events, education and play in an area that meets the highest environmental standards.

Reflecting on this achievement, our Environmental Services Manager, Mike Moriarty said:

“The importance of green spaces cannot be stressed enough. They play a vital role within the community as places that benefit physical and mental health. A place for people to meet and interact or for individuals to take time out and get away from it all.

The Barlow Hall site sustains and encourages biodiversity and environmental sustainability. As such we want to continue maintaining the high standards we have set to obtain the award and continue the work and community beneficial involvement going forward to retain the award next year."
