Water: hot tips to keep safe and healthy

Hot water tap
Hot tips: know the danger signals to stay safe.

Keep your family safe and healthy with these top tips . . .

Hot water

It’s extremely unlikely that anything will go wrong with your hot water system – but if you have an immersion heater it’s worth knowing the problem signs:

  • an unexpected rise in the temperature of your hot water
  • warm water coming out of your cold water taps
  • unusual noises from your heating system including rumbling, banging, or bubbling

If any of these things happen, turn off the immersion heater immediately. Then report the fault to us: phone 0161 953 2586.

If you have a hot water storage cylinder, set the thermostat to at least 60 degrees centigrade. But be very careful with hot water - take care of scalding, especially with young children, older people and disabled people.

Healthy water

Tap water is always safe to drink if you follow a few simple tips:

  • if you’ve been away for a week or more, run all the taps and the shower for a couple of minutes
  • do the same with any individual tap or shower you’ve not used for a week
  • keep taps and shower heads clean
