Building in your area

Southway has successfully pursued a programme of new build development as well as acquisition of existing properties in recent years, in order to increase the supply of affordable housing within our area. This has resulted in 65 new homes built (with a further 40 recently started on site and 56 recently granted planning permission) as well as around 70 homes acquired, improved and let.

2015 developments:
  • Holland Court, Chorlton – a major programme of improvements converted 11 bedsits into 1 bedroom flats in this sheltered scheme.
  • Westbrook Walk, Old Moat – an Age Friendly development of 14 new flats, 1 new bungalow and 3 improved bungalows.
  • White Swan Court, Ladybarn – 12 x 1 bedroom flats.
  • 3 sites at the Former Ladybarn Public House, Barlow Hall Road and Barnett Avenue – Our contractor Wates is about to start work to build a total of 24 new homes. These 1 and 2 bed flats will be available for let within the next 12 months.

2016 developments:
  • Hayward Court – 23 flats ont he site of the former Ladybarn Social Club
  • Oasis Close – 14 one bedroom ‘Age Friendly’ cottage flats on the Green End Road Compound on Green End Road, Burnage.
New housing development and further acquisition forms a key part of Southway’s ‘Futures Strategy’. We have firm ambitions to grow and diversify, and as part of that process are producing a Development Strategy. It will be important for the Development Strategy to be flexible, allowing Southway to react to any changes in policy and housing markets in order to maximise the output from its investment. Flexibility is therefore an underpinning ‘theme’ of the proposed approach.
The purpose of this further housing development and acquisition, in line with the wider Futures Strategy, will be:
  • To increase the supply of housing in areas that are in or close to South Manchester, improving the range and choice of housing available for those who currently have limited or no access to a decent, safe and secure home.
  • To generate financial surplus that can be used to help fund our core business and social objectives.

In some circumstances it is likely that development schemes will achieve more than one purpose.
We are continuing to look for development opportunities in or in the areas surrounding South Manchester. If you have a site or other development opportunity that you think may be of interest to us, please contact Patrick Ross at or on 0161 448 4200.
