Keeping dogs

A dog that's well-behaved, and properly looked-after can bring pleasure and company to its owner.

But we have to think about all our tenants and need to be sure that your pet won't cause any problems. You can keep a dog unless:

  • you live in a multi storey block; or
  • you get to your home through an entrance shared with other tenants and there is a 'no dog' agreement between all the tenants and Southway. (The agreement may have been made originally with the City Council - it is still valid)

Keeping a dog responsibly

Even if you are allowed to keep a dog in your home, it must not annoy other people - for example by barking or being aggressive. And the dog must not be allowed to destroy any part of the property.

You must clear up any mess - especially in communal areas or in public places. You can be fined up to £1,000 if your dog fouls public land. Manchester City Council provides free poop-scoops.

A tenant who doesn't keep to these basic rules is breaking their tenancy agreement - we could ask them to get rid of the animal, or risk legal action for antisocial behaviour.
