Hate crime

What is hate crime?

A hate crime is any criminal offence that you believe, or anyone else believes, is motivated by the offender's prejudice or hatred of you because of your:

  •  race, colour, ethnic origin, nationality or national origins
  •  religion
  •  gender or gender identity
  •  sexual orientation
  •  disability

It can can take many forms including:

  • physical assault, damage to property, offensive graffiti, arson
  • verbal threats, offensive letters, abusive or obscene phone calls, intimidatory gangs, malicious complaints
  • offensive leaflets and posters, abusive gestures, rubbish-dumping outside your home or through a letterbox, bullying at school or work.
